“Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States,” (Center for Disease Control and Prevention). It is a deadly crippler as the leading cause of disability in the US as well. With these baffling statistics, it led us here at Hands from the Heart to ignite channels of open discussions about the disease.

We are here to guide you with answers to what the disease is and how to prevent it. We even will tackle topics of what population of people are affected the most by stroke. The key for us as a community is to educate one another about the warning signs and preventative measures we need to be aware of to live long-term healthy lives.

According to the American Stroke Association “stroke is a disease that affects the arteries leading to and within the brain [and] occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts (or ruptures). When that happens , part of the brain cannot get the blood (and oxygen) it needs, so it and brain cells die ,” (2017).

The fact of the matter is approximately 80% of strokes are preventable. Staying active and paying attention to your sodium intake are small measures that lead to huge milestones in the defeat against stroke prevention.

We want those in our community to live healthy lives; which is why we are making a pledge to lead in the cause of stroke education, prevention and awareness.
